   GLADYS ELPHICK  (1904-1988)





1904    Aboriginal community leader, was born  in Adelaide .

1973  She was an Australian Aboriginal women of Kaurna and Ngadjuri descent , best           known as the founding president of the Council of Aboriginal Woman of South Australia
Mrs. Glady was raised the Point Pearce Mission on the York Peninsula .
  
1922  She had married with Walter Hughesand .

1937  Her husband death , Gladys moved to Adelaide and worked as a domestic.

1940  Elphick had married Frederick Joseph Elphick. Frederick was a soldier.

1940 Gladys  joined the Aborigines Advancement league of South Australia .

1967 The Council was  active in campaigning for the  Referendum.

1971  Gladys was appended a member of the order of the British Emprie (MBE) .1973 Mrs Elphick became the founding president of the Council of Aboriginal Women of      South Australia .

1977 She co-founded The Aboriginal Medical Service of South Australia  
  
1988 Gladys death  in  Adelaide .

2003 the Aboriginal women's group advised the International Women's Day Committee Presedent the inaugural Gladys Elphick award.
